Padmore Culture The Last Letter From Your Lover Jojo Moyes

The eighth book of one of our favorite authors, Jojo Moyes, is being turned into a movie and we can't contain our excitement.  We’re talking about The Last Letter From Your Lover.

Set between London and the French Riviera, the romance is a love story spanning multiple generations and two timelines.

The first is that of Jennifer Stirling in 1960, who wakes up from a car accident remembering nothing about her life, not even the love letters from a mysterious "B."

Jennifer Stirling is played by Shailene Woodley and Anthony O'Hare by Callum Turner.

The second is focused on journalist Ellie, as she discovers Jennifer's letter in her newspaper's archives. She is a young journalist in contemporary London and when she uncovers a series of love letters recounting a star-crossed affair in the 1960s, she becomes obsessed. The romance between the two lovers is so intense in the letters that Ellie tries to find the couple to discover how their story ended. She attempts to piece together the story, while trying to save her own fledgling career and romantic life.

Felicity Jones plays journalist Ellie Haworth. Nabhaan Rizwan also features as an archivist named Rory, helping Ellie with her mystery.

Not everything is peaches and cream since the woman in the letters is married to a wealthy, cold industrialist at the time of the affair. Her husband threatens her if she ever tries to leave him. Hence the conundrum and the mystery of what happened. Did she or didn't she tried to leave with her lover?

And who plays the husband? Well, no other than Joe Alwyn. Yes, that Joe. Taylor Swift's beau.

What the actresses have to say?

Woodley was excited about this project from the get-go. She told Entertainment Weekly in January that she was "inclined to say yes" to starring in the film "before [she] even read the script," as she was excited to work with Euphoria’s director Augustine Frizzell, who is helming the project.

"Then I read the script and it was really beautifully executed — I don't feel like there's a lot of movies that are told this way and are also executed in a way that's thoroughly entertaining and intelligent," she said.

In the same interview, Jones expressed a similar quick reaction to the film, "It was just an immediate response. It had such fun to it, as well as being quite emotional."

Read the Book Before the Movie

The book, which debuted in 2012, is one of many from author Jojo Moyes and the second one being adapted as a movie. The first one is Me before You starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke.

A tale of forbidden love and forgotten secrets.

"This novel depicts a young woman's struggle with her marriage during the 1960s when divorce was taboo and society rules dictated that women be seen and not heard." -Summer

"One of the few books that made me cry like a little girl and made me wonder about whether I've made the right choices in life... " - Ivana

"A spellbinding, intoxicating love story with a knockout ending, The Last Letter from Your Lover will appeal to the readers who have made One Day and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society bestsellers." - Publisher

Jojo Moyes once again proves that neither time nor distance can put out the flames of true love, love that doesn't just connect bodies, but souls. - Liza Wiemer

I do not generally read romances but Jojo Moyes manages to write her romance with a bit more substance than most including a catchy story and reasonably realistic characters. This book also has the advantage of being set back a little in the past and the descriptions of relationships and attitudes of the sixties were very true. It was certainly a page turner for me… -Phrynne

The film is scheduled to be released on Netflix in select territories on July 23, 2021.  In the United Kingdom and Ireland in theaters it will be released on August 6, 2021 and in Scandinavia on July 30, 2021.
